What Makes the Canton Fair Different

How to Register

Registration for the Canton Fair is mandatory and best done online beforehand to save time and money. Complete the online registration via the official BEST (Buyer E-Service Tool) platform. Once approved, you can collect your buyer badge at the fair complex or designated hotels in Guangzhou.

What to Bring

  • Documents: Passport, buyer badge, 200+ business cards, company profile, IEC certificate, GST copy.
  • Sourcing tools: WeChat installed, high-capacity power bank, notebook, measuring tape, luggage scale, USB drive.
  • Personal: Comfortable shoes, layered clothing (halls can be cold), essential medication, reliable VPN.

How to Source Effectively

  • Before: Define 3-5 core categories, research the exhibitor list, prepare strict spec sheets, and set up your WeChat profile professionally.
  • During: Walk through broadly on Day 1. Shortlist and ask deeper questions on Day 2. Negotiate on Day 3. Always ask if they are a factory or trading company. Compare at least 5 suppliers for your core product. Request samples to your hotel or home address and photograph the product along with the supplier's business card.

Negotiation Tips

Don't negotiate aggressively on Day 1. Remember that volume is your best leverage. Always ask for FOB pricing (Free on Board). Never accept the first price (there is typically a 10-20% margin). Use the 'I'm comparing with another supplier in Hall 4' technique. Discuss payment terms clearly (standard is 30% T/T deposit, 70% before shipment). Finally, get every specification and price in writing.

Beyond the Fair: Guangzhou

The Canton Fair is just the beginning. Guangzhou is surrounded by dedicated wholesale markets. You can easily schedule factory visits: Foshan is 1 hour away (ceramics and furniture), Dongguan is 1.5 hours away (electronics and garments), and Shenzhen is a quick bullet train ride away (technology and hardware).

Common Mistakes

Trying to cover all three phases in one trip will lead to exhaustion. Not having WeChat installed will cut you off from 90% of communication. Ignoring the exhibitor directory means you'll wander aimlessly. Not verifying if you're speaking to a manufacturer vs. a trading company can cost you margins. Finally, failing to follow up within 48 hours of meeting means suppliers will forget you.

Post-Fair Follow-Up

Organize your contacts and business cards on your flight home. Send WeChat messages or emails within 48 hours to your shortlisted suppliers. Request formal email quotations. Order paid samples from your top 2-3 suppliers before making large orders. Verify the suppliers thoroughly, and plan your next visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Canton Fair free?

Yes, attendance is completely free for overseas buyers if you register in advance online. If you register in person at the venue without pre-registration, there is usually a small fee (around 100 RMB) for the buyer badge.

Do I need a visa?

Yes, Indian citizens require a Chinese Business (M) visa to attend. Processing usually takes 4-7 working days. There is also a 144-hour transit visa exemption available if you are flying through Guangzhou to a third country.

Can I buy products directly at the fair?

No, the Canton Fair is not a retail market. It is an exhibition for B2B wholesale buyers to meet manufacturers, inspect samples, establish relationships, and place bulk manufacturing orders for export.

How many days should I attend?

Each phase runs for 5 days. Attending for 3 to 4 days per phase is ideal. Our 5-day tour includes 3 days at the fair and 1 day exploring local wholesale product markets.

Is English spoken by suppliers?

Most exhibitors have at least one English-speaking staff member, though fluency varies. Having a local translator or bilingual guide (which our tour provides) is highly recommended for negotiating complex terms.

Should I bring INR or Chinese Yuan?

Indian Rupees are not accepted. You should carry Chinese Yuan (RMB) or US Dollars. Alternatively, carry an international Visa or Mastercard for major payments, and link a supported card to Alipay/WeChat Pay for local daily expenses.

Which phase is best for first-timers?

It depends entirely on your industry. If you sell electronics, machinery, or hardware, Phase 1 is essential. If you sell home goods, gifts, or decor, Phase 2 is best. Choose the phase that matches your exact business category.
